Twenty-five Mile Fire Update
September 14, 2021
Size: 21,552 acres
Total Personnel: 329 (6 crews, 15 engines, 3 helicopters, 15 water tenders, 3 heavy equipment)
Containment: 50%
Location: 12 miles NW of Chelan, WA
Cause: Under investigation
Pacific Northwest Team 3 will be transferring management of the Twenty-five Mile Fire to Southwest Team 3, at 7:00 am tomorrow.
Yesterday: Working northwest of Stormy Mountain along Devil’s Backbone, firefighters used aerial and hand ignition to further increase depth of the containment line west of the fire. Near East Point, in the North Fork of Thirty-five Mile Creek drainage, the fire burned actively in heavy fuels. This fire activity did not threaten containment lines but did produce smoke visible throughout the surrounding area. Heavy fuels will remain dry in the coming week and the fire will likely continue to burn though “islands” of green trees interior to the containment lines, producing visible smoke. Mop up continues in the Slide Peak area and elsewhere on the fire as crews continue checking for and extinguishing any hot spots. In areas where there has been no recent heat detected they continued to backhaul equipment so that it can be refurbished and made available for use where needed.
Today: Firefighters will continue working to bolster the containment line west of the fire ahead of a change in weather anticipated for later this week. While cooler, wetter, weather is expected for the weekend, there remains a need to ensure a secure containment line that will stop spread of the fire given the potential for warmer, drier, conditions to return in the coming weeks. Using both hand and aerial ignition, and as conditions allow, they will be working to complete remaining firing along the line southwest of the fire. Crews will also continue the progress made completing road repairs where needed to ensure safe access for fire personnel.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Yesterday was mostly sunny with continued drying which allowed for active burning in some interior areas of the fire. Today will be similar, with potential for moderate fire behavior in unburned pockets of fuel. There will be a mid-week shift in the weather that will bring colder temperatures and significant precipitation by the end of the week. Cooler, wetter weather will slow fire behavior through the weekend although there remains the potential for a return to warmer drier conditions later in the month.
Evacuations: Effective at noon on September 13, all remaining evacuation notices related to the Twenty-Five Mile Fire were removed. For more information, contact Chelan County Emergency Management, or follow their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CCSOEM.
Closures: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has issued an emergency fire closure for some lands in the vicinity of the Twenty-five Mile Fire. This closure is needed to provide for public and firefighter safety. Please check the interactive map of emergency closures when planning an outing: tinyurl.com/25mileforest

Twenty-five Mile Fire Update - September 11
Twentyfive Mile Wildfire
News – 19 hrs. ago
Size: 21,130 acres

Total Personnel: 401

Containment: 40%

Location: 12 miles NW of Chelan, WA

Cause: Under investigation

Weather and Fire Behavior: Light rain showers fell over the fire area yesterday though heavy fuels remain very dry. Heavy fuels are large diameter snags, logs, and large limb wood, that ignite and are consumed more slowly than finer fuels like grass, leaves, and moss. The heavy fuels are still burning and as the finer fuels dry out, they will again contribute to fire spread. Today will be drier and warmer, mostly sunny in the morning with increasing clouds in the afternoon, and light winds from the west-southwest. Today’s forecasted light winds, cloud cover, and increased relative humidity will moderate fire activity.

Yesterday: Using both hand and aerial ignition, firefighters were able to conduct firing operations in the afternoon along Devil’s Backbone. Heavy fuels were receptive to burning, however additional burning may be required to secure the line due to the high moisture content of some of the finer fuels which prevented them from fully consuming during firing operations. Where burnout operations were completed several days ago, firefighters continued patrolling, mopping up (extinguishing or removing any remaining burning material along or near the fire line), and securing the line. Crews also made good progress completing road work needed to ensure safe access for fire personnel on Forest Roads 8410 and 5900.

Today: If conditions allow, firefighters plan to continue firing along the Devil’s Backbone, from Stormy Mountain north toward Brennegan Creek. Aerial ignition to reduce fuels adjacent to the containment line may also continue north of Brennegan Creek and South of Junior Point. Mop up of previously completed burnouts will also continue where needed. Due to increasing confidence in containment lines on the southeast side of the fire, structure protection crews will begin breaking down the network of hoses, pumps, and other equipment, working south of Hollywood Beach and into the First Creek Area.

Evacuations: Level 1 (Be Ready): All properties along South Lakeshore Road (from just north of Lake Chelan State Park to the end of the roadway), First Creek Road and Granite Falls Road. A map of current evacuation levels is available at: bit.ly/2WhU9Nu and additional information is available from Chelan County Emergency Management (facebook.com/ccsoem/).

Closures: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest expanded the emergency fire closure in place for the Twenty-five Mile Fire earlier this week. This closure is needed to provide for public and firefighter safety. Please check the interactive map of emergency closures when planning an outing: tinyurl.com/25mileforest.

Twenty-five Mile Fire Update
September 3, 2021
Yesterday: The weather was again conducive to successful burnout operations. To the south, firefighters worked from Slide Peak along Forest Road 8410 to tie in with dozer line. On the North side of the fire they conducted mop-up operations between Utah Saddle and Grouse Mountain. Air support included delivering water to keep fire spread in check, monitoring firelines, and aerial ignition to strengthen fire lines by adding depth.
Today: Engines and firefighters continue to hold, mop-up, and improve the fire line between Twenty-Five Mile State Park and Junior Spike, utilizing aerial firing and suppression support. Burning operations will continue to strengthen containment lines around Slide Ridge. Firefighters working along existing fire lines will search for and extinguish areas of heat that may pose a threat to containment lines. Firefighters will continue to maintain the network of pumps and equipment installed along the Lake Chelan corridor and First Creek subdivision.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Warmer and drier weather is likely to lead to increased fire activity later today and into the evening. Winds will be light and variable early in the day, but begin picking up through the weekend and into Monday.
Evacuations: Level 1 (Be Ready): All properties along South Lakeshore Road (from just north of Lake Chelan State Park to the end of the roadway), First Creek Road and Granite Falls Road. Twenty-five Mile Fire Update
September 2, 2021
Size: 14,119 acres
Total Personnel: 492
Containment: 37%
Cause: Under investigation
Single Residences: 678 Threatened, 1 Lost
Management of the Twenty-five Mile Fire has been transferred to Pacific Northwest Team 3, a Type 1 Incident Management Team.
Yesterday: The weather was conducive to successful burnout operations for adding depth and strengthening firelines. To the south, firefighters worked from Slide Peak along Forest Road 8410 to tie in with dozer line. On the North side of the fire, they continued with the previous days’ burnout operation between Dove Point and Junior Spike, utilizing hand crews and aerial ignition. The helicopter mounted plastic sphere dispenser (PSD) distributes spheres that are about the shape and size of ping pong balls. The plastic spheres contain potassium permanganate and are injected with ethylene glycol (antifreeze). A chemical reaction causes the sphere to ignite approximately 20 to 30 seconds after injection. A short video describing PSD use is available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iPNOw-oQgo.
Today: Engines and firefighters will continue to secure and hold the fire line between Twenty-Five Mile State Park and Junior Spike, taking advantage of opportunities to conduct burn operations when possible. Crews will continue burning operations to strengthen containment lines in the area of Slide Ridge while monitoring areas that were burned previously. Mop-up operations will be conducted where needed to address potential threats to containment lines. Chelan structure protection groups will maintain the pumps and equipment that have been installed and continue to refine protection plans for homes, structures and other values at risk along the Lake Chelan corridor and First Creek subdivision.
Fields Point Landing is open to the public for ferry parking, pick up and drop off. Fire support operations are ongoing at Fields Point, so please yield to fire traffic and stay in areas clearly marked for public use.
Aircraft supporting firefighting efforts for the Twenty-five Mile Fire may use local bodies of water, including Lake Chelan. Recreational boaters should be aware of the potential for these firefighting aircraft, including helicopters and fixed wing resources like scoopers, to be on the water. Please give these aircraft space to safely operate.
Weather and Fire Behavior: The most active burning occurred in the area around Chesapeake Saddle and below Stormy Spike Camp yesterday. Today’s weather will be warmer, with high temperatures increasing through the weekend into the mid to upper seventies. Relative humidity will remain low through Friday, with low humidity percentages around 20 percent. Cloud cover is forecasted for Saturday, with a slight chance for rain possible. Fire behavior will be generally low to moderate with an increase of activity in the afternoon, as easterly winds allow for a western push. Winds will be light though, generally less than ten miles per hour, and smoke is expected to settle into valleys, especially overnight.
Vehicle Travel: South Lakeshore Road is open to Fields Point Landing. Please avoid travel in this area due to heavy fire traffic.
Closures: Some National Forest System lands in the vicinity of the Twenty-five Mile Creek Fire are closed. For an interactive map of emergency closures, visit: tinyurl.com/25mileforest.
Fire Restrictions: Campfire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are prohibited throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including developed campgrounds and congressionally designated Wilderness. Yesterday, red flag conditions were present across the fire area bringing high winds and active fire behavior. Though deliberate risk assessments, Prineville Hotshots assessed and engaged the fire in the areas where the fire crossed containment lines on Sunday. This work included a concerted effort to identify risk, hazards, and the medical resources necessary to safely work in the steep and rugged terrain. The hotshots then worked with additional resources to contain both the slop over and two spot fires near Utah Saddle.
Today, fire crews continue preparation efforts along the 8410 Road towards Stormy Mountain, and will continue firing operations as conditions permit in order to secure Slide Ridge and the 8410 Road. Engines and firefighters will be working to secure and hold the fire line between Twenty-Five Mile State Park and Grouse Mountain, and will conduct firing operations as needed between Grouse Mountain and Dove Point. Additional options for aerial firing operations will be available to crews as needed. The structure groups will continue to develop protection plans for values at risk along the Lake Chelan corridor and First Creek subdivision.

Yesterday the fire was very active along the southern perimeter in the vicinity of Slide Peak where firing operations were used to slow and direct the fires movement. In the late afternoon, firing tactics were initiated near Grouse Mountain where the fire made a northwesterly run. The operation was successful and was monitored throughout the night. Crews began back hauling equipment from Baldy Spike Camp and the western perimeter was mostly unstaffed as containment lines have been completed along Devil’s Backbone. The structure protection group continued work along First Creek Road.
Today active to very active fire behavior is anticipated. The fire is expected to move to the west, southwest and south. Containment lines are expected to be completed along the southern perimeter where firing operations will be used when necessary for reinforcement. Active fire behavior is expected to continue today in the vicinity of Grouse Mountain where firing will likely continue throughout the day. Containment lines along the northeastern perimeter will be in watch and hold status and any spots or threats to containment lines will be addressed. The structure protection group will test water delivery systems (pumps, tanks, and hoses) along First Creek Road.
Fields Point Landing is open to the public for ferry parking, pick up and drop off. Fire support operations are ongoing at Fields Point. Members of the public are reminded to yield to fire traffic and to stay in areas clearly marked for public use.

Twenty-Five Mile Fire Update
August 27, 2021
Size: 11,116 acres
Total Personnel: 548
Containment: 24%
Cause: Under investigation
Structures Threatened: 772
Structures Lost: 1
Yesterday an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) detected several hot spots west of Fields Point Landing that were quickly extinguished by ground crews. A slop over near Slide Peak was held in check by crews who initiated a firing operation that was supported by dozers and scooper aircraft.
Line construction and preparation for future firing operations continued along Devils Backbone and is expected to be completed by end of shift on Sunday. Containment line between Crescent Hill and Grouse Mountain are in place with minor improvements needed in areas. Improvement and securing of containment lines along the northern perimeter of the fire progressed well and is expected to be completed by end of shift today. Aircraft from the North Cascade Smoke Jumper Base re-supplied Spike Camps on Devils Backbone with two para-cargo drops.
Today, fire behavior is expected to be minimal in the northeastern corner with creeping and smoldering anticipated, while rising temperatures and gusty winds could lead to active fire behavior with uphill runs in the southern and western perimeter. Emphasis on completing preparations for firing operations, should they be needed will be the objective of crews along the southern and western perimeters today.
Fields Point Landing is open to the public for pick up and drop off only. Fire support operations are ongoing at Fields Point. Members of the public are reminded to yield to fire traffic and to stay in areas clearly marked for public use.
Rotor and fixed-wing air resources will continue to be available to support ground crews. Aircraft may use local bodies of water, including Lake Chelan. Recreational boaters should be aware of aircraft takeoff and landings and keep a safe distance.

Structures Lost: 1
Yesterday, crews made significant progress on securing containment lines on the north edge of the fire. Heavy equipment and crews continued to prepare lines to the south near Slide Ridge and were able to initiate a small firing operation in the vicinity of Forest Service Road 8410. Fire behavior was moderate, and the firing operation was successful. Crews maintained an overnight shift reinforcing structure protection operations in and around properties and homes.
Today, fire behavior is expected to increase to moderate or active levels when the cloud cover breaks. Heavy equipment and crews will continue to construct line in areas with heavy fuel loads. Along the southern and western edges of the fire, crews will continue to construct line from 125 to the finger. On the northern perimeter of the fire, crews are continuing to improve the line working south towards Angle Peak while also monitoring and mopping up hot spots around homes and properties.
Rotor and fixed-wing air resources will continue working on the fire throughout the day and improved weather conditions make the use of aviation assets more likely today. Aircraft may use local bodies of water, including Lake Chelan. Recreational boaters should be aware of aircraft takeoff and landings and keep a safe distance.

#TwentyFiveMileFire Update
August 21, 2021
Size: 9,641 acres
Total Personnel: 441
Containment: 5%
Cause: Under investigation

Reduced acreage is due to more accurate mapping. Yesterday there was increased activity seen along the southeast corner of the fire in the Slide Ridge area. Super scooper aircraft were used extensively to help reduce the spread to south and east. Engines and crews continued efforts around impacted communities, identifying hazards around structures and extinguishing hotspots. Crews were able to go direct along the fire line east of Twenty-Five Mile creek, significantly reducing the threat of the fire continuing to back down the slope towards the private property and homes along South Lakeshore Road. The weather conditions did produce gusty outflow winds and lightning was observed in the area. Crews again maintained an overnight shift, reinforcing structure protection operations in and around properties and homes.
Today, heavy equipment and crews will construct direct dozer and handline in the vicinity of Twenty-Five Mile State Park both to the south and west. Along the southern and western edges of the fire, crews evaluate opportunities to prepare for strategic firing operations along Slide Ridge and Devils Backbone. Firefighters will continue to improve and secure containment lines in the vicinity of Grouse Mountain. Structure protection efforts will continue along South Lakeshore Road.
A flash-flood watch continues over the area as storms are expected through Saturday afternoon. The storms will increase the relative humidity and dampen fire behavior but continued gusty outflow winds will be present across the fire area.
Rotor and fixed-wing air resources will continue attack on the fire throughout the day. Aircraft may use local bodies of water, including Lake Chelan, to fill. Recreational boaters should be aware of aircraft takeoff and landings and keep a safe distance.

Weather: Flash Flood Watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. A storm system will move through the region Friday night and Saturday, bringing cooler temperatures and widespread showers and thunderstorms Another system moves in Sunday, mostly staying to the north. This will bring the potential for relatively drier conditions, breezy/gust winds, and elevated fire weather concerns Sunday afternoon. Temperatures trend to near normal toward the middle and end of next week, with limited mountain shower chances Thursday

Winds with gusts to 40mph expected near the 25 Mile Creek Fire starting today through Wednesday. Cooler temperatures may help overnight fire activity, but winds will fan the fire.
One structure was reported to have been lost last night. Red Cross has set up a shelter at MOE Elementary School in Chelan.

Newsbreak...
CHELAN — The Twenty-Five Mile Fire has grown to roughly 4,000 acres since it started Sunday afternoon northwest of Chelan, near Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park.

A Type-3 incident management team is being briefed this morning and will lead firefighting efforts, said Victoria Wilkins, Forest Service spokeswoman for the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

The American Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at Morgen Owings Elementary School in Chelan on Sunday night for those displaced by the fire.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook in anticipation of gusty winds across North Central Washington. Gusts of 20 mph to 30 mph are expected.

Windy and dry conditions forecast for the region today are projected to worsen fire conditions, according to the weather outlook. The breezy weather is anticipated to stick around on Tuesday, with gusts up to 35 mph.
