Clearing of the SR 20 North Cascades Highway begins this coming Monday! This usually takes 6 to 8 weeks or so to complete as crews work to reopen one of the most scenic stretches of road in the state."

A sure sign of spring in the North Cascades is the annual migration of snowmobiles back to their homes from their seasonal playground at Early Winters gate to make way for spring clearing crews.

Spring clearing starts next Monday (3/27), so please move your sleds this weekend!"

The way the climate is changing as well as El Nino taking hold it looks pretty clear that we'll be getting a fast melt this season. I won't be surprised if we see a late April opening but mid May at latest.

Yes and it is a dangerous job at that, up there this time of year or anytime for that matter. Slides can happen anytime.
And sure Jingles, we do like this time of year especially, when all is calmed down. And acutally tourist season doesn't seem to kick in until almost July 4th. And that's our economy now.

I should add that the avy cones on the HWY are small this year. Could be a record opening.
