WHITMORE FIRE UPDATE
NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12
Incident Commander: Bobby Shindelar
August 18, 2021

The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.
A low pressure system moved into the area yesterday, bringing measurable rain to some surrounding fires but only a trace amount over the Whitmore Fire. It will be warmer today, with high temperatures ranging from 73 to 82 degrees over most of the fire area. Winds will trend from the north at 10 to 12 miles per hour.

Operations:
Blowing dust and ash became an issue yesterday with the increased winds, so water tenders moved through the fire area watering roads to improve conditions. Patrolling engines on the eastern fire perimeter located several smoking hot spots near the fireline yesterday and extinguished the heat sources by exposing the smoldering material and mixing it with water and soil. Firefighters continued their work systematically gridding the northeast fire perimeter, searching for creeping fire or stumps that were still burning near the fireline. Fire crews finished wrapping and securing the old Mount Whitmore Lookout yesterday, ensuring the historic wood structure would be protected from smoldering fuels nearby.
Mop-up in the northeastern portion of the fire is ongoing today as fire crews strengthen and deepen fire containment lines. Firefighters will continue to identify and map future suppression repair needs in the Kartar Valley and around the fire. As containment increases and mop-up work winds down, excess equipment and crews are being demobilized from this incident to assist on other regional fires.

Evacuations:
All Level 2 evacuations on the Whitmore Fire have been reduced to Level 1 evacuations. The Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission are now all in a level 1 evacuation status. Call Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 with all evacuation questions.

Road Closures:
Coyote Creek Road remains closed.

Whitmore Fire Morning Update 8.15.21
Whitmore Fire Wildfire

WHITMORE FIRE UPDATE
NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12
Incident Commander: Bobby Shindelar
August 15, 2021
The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.
There is a Red Flag Warning today from 1 PM to 11 PM for gusty westerly winds combined with low relative humidity. The excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 PM tonight for dangerously hot conditions with afternoon temperatures in the upper 90s to 103. These conditions will further test the fire containment lines, but no fire growth is expected beyond the current footprint.

Operations

The Red Flag conditions today have the potential to cause flare ups and spot fires from remaining heat sources, so fire crews will be on the lookout and will quickly respond to any uptick in fire behavior resulting from the dry and gusty winds. Containment lines around the fire remain secure and firefighters will remain vigilant given today’s conditions.
Yesterday, firefighters patrolled and continued mop-up work around the fire perimeter. Fire crews will continue mop-up along the northern and eastern flanks of the fire. In areas of recent burnout on the northern edge of the fire, fire crews will be “gridding” today as they search for any remaining small fires by systematically walking over the area along parallel lines. Firefighters will also begin repairing the control lines created during fire suppression in the southeast portion of the fire.

Evacuations

Level 2 evacuations remain in place through the Red Flag Warning period for the Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission. Call Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 with all evacuation questions.

Traffic and Road Closures
Coyote Creek Road remains closed.

The Omak Stampede is ending today, and heavy traffic is expected this afternoon along the SR155 corridor. Please use extra caution driving, as fire equipment accesses the northern portion of the fire from SR155 and will be entering and exiting side roads.

Whitmore Fire Morning Update 8.14.21
Whitmore Fire Wildfire

WHITMORE FIRE UPDATENORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12Incident Commander: Bobby Shindelar August 14, 2021
The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.
Smoke from fires in northern Washington and British Columbia continues to blanket the area. This has the effect of dampening fire activity. Today, there is a “Fire Weather Watch” due to Sunday afternoon’s forecast of gusty winds ahead of a cold front and low relative humidity. A Fire Weather Watch goes into effect when there is potential for a Red Flag Warning, which marks hot, dry, and windy conditions that are ideal for extreme fire behavior. These upcoming winds will further test the fire’s containment lines, but the fire is not anticipated to grow beyond its current footprint. Containment lines remain secure and firefighters will remain vigilant given the potential for a Red Flag Warning tomorrow.
Operations Yesterday, firefighters patrolled the entire perimeter of the fire and continued “mopping up:” digging up and extinguishing residual burning materials close to containment lines in order to secure them. Crews completed mop-up around the ridgetop by Jim Creek Road and that area is now in patrol status.
The UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) unit also ran an infrared detection flight from Omak Lake, around Camp Progress, and around the Dan Nason Basin areas. Very little heat was detected in that area of the fire and no heat appeared close to containment lines. In the southern part of the fire, sawyers felled fire-weakened trees along Whitmore Mountain Cutoff Road, creating access up to Whitmore lookout.
EvacuationsLevel 2 evacuations remain in place through the Red Flag Warning period for the Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission. Call Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 with all evacuation questions.
Traffic and Road ClosuresCoyote Creek Road remains closed.
There will be increased traffic due to the Omak Stampede this weekend. Please use extra caution driving, as fire equipment accesses the northern portion of the fire from SR155 and will be entering and exiting side roads.

Whitmore Fire Morning Update 8.13.21
Whitmore Fire Wildfire
News – 12 hrs. ago
The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.

SIZE: 57,478 acres
CONTAINMENT: 35%
PERSONNEL: 379
CAUSE: Lightning
RESOURCES:
Hand Crews: 8
Engines: 23
Dozers: 8
Water Tenders: 13
Helicopters: 1
Fixed Wing: 1

Operations
Firefighters successfully held all control lines around the fire during strong north winds and Red Flag conditions yesterday, limiting fire growth to just 18 acres. The north winds also continued to direct smoke south from fires in northern Washington and British Columbia onto the Colville Reservation. This smoke over the region from fires to the north helped to dampen fire activity, but the combined winds and smoke also prevented aircraft from flying yesterday.

Last night, firefighters again used the specialized drone for firing operations along the Dan Nason Basin Road, cleaning up and securing that portion of the fire’s edge. Around most of the fire perimeter, fire crews are working on mop-up to strengthen the fireline. These mop-up actions will continue for the next several days as crews work to hold, deepen, and improve the fireline. Mop-up includes extinguishing or removing burning material along control lines and working to trench logs to prevent them rolling down into unburned areas, which makes the fire perimeter more secure and reduces residual smoke. Firefighters anticipate very little growth in the fire’s footprint beyond the current size, and most additional acreage at this point would be the result of limited burning operations to secure and clean up areas on the fire perimeter.

There will be increased traffic due to the Omak Stampede this weekend. Please use extra caution driving as fire equipment accesses the northern portion of the fire from SR155 and will be entering and exiting side roads.

Evacuations
Level 2 evacuations remain in place for the Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission. Call Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 with all evacuation questions.

Road Closures
Coyote Creek Road remains closed.

WHITMORE FIRE UPDATE
NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12
Incident Commander: Bobby Shindelar
August 11, 2021

The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.

Operations

Yesterday, the western and southern flanks of the fire were in patrol status. Fire resources constructed direct control lines on the north and east sides of the fire, using dozers and handline as well as utilizing existing roads. Firing operations to secure the fire’s edge along these control lines were successful yesterday and into yesterday evening. These efforts will continue today and tonight. Crews built control lines in the area around the 1012 road on the northern portion of the fire and were assisted by water drops from aircraft. Firefighters remain focused on structure protection as well.
Firefighters continue their work to keep the fire within the smallest possible footprint. Tonight, firefighters will be using a specialized drone to perform aerial ignition for burnout operations on the northern fire edge, increasing precision and reducing risk and exposure for fire crews. Additional resources, including more engines, are arriving today. Firefighters are preparing for a predicted wind event tonight, with winds increasing and gusting from the north-northwest.

Evacuations

Level 2 evacuations are still in place for the Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission. Call (509) 634-2472 with all evacuation questions.

Road Closures

Columbia River Road is now open, but Coyote Creek Road remains closed.

Operations
A warming and drying trend is predicted for this week, with temperatures increasing about 10 degrees from yesterday as the moisture from recent rains disappears. Yesterday, air resources dropped water and aerial retardant on several spot fires, allowing firefighters to continue line construction in the northern portion of the fire. Firefighters will be using a specialized drone for the next several days which has an infrared camera to search for additional spot fires in the rugged terrain.

Fire crews conducted burnout operations last night on the northern portion of the fire and are preparing the Dan Nason Basin Road for further burnout operations today. Firefighters are completing structure assessment and developing plans to protect homes along SR155 in case fire spreads further to the north and east. In the southeastern corner of the fire, fire crews are mopping up and securing containment lines. They will patrol fire areas along Columbia River Road, Goose Flats, and Kartar Valley Road. Two type 1 helicopters will be assigned to the Whitmore Fire today.

Evacuations
Level 2 evacuations are still in place for the Columbia River Road corridor, Kartar Valley, Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission.

The Whitmore Fire is located on the Colville Reservation south of Omak Lake and west of Nespelem, WA. The Incident Command Post at Nespelem Community Center is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of firefighters and community members.
Operations
Yesterday, fire fighters took advantage of cooler temperatures, higher moisture levels, and less active fire behavior to secure stretches of fireline. The southwest to southeast borders of the fire along Columbia River Road experienced no fire spread and firefighters conducted mop-up operations successfully. Today, resources will be patrolling that area.
Along the northern portion of the fire, including Kartar Creek Road, aircraft assisted crews in securing the perimeter. Dozers and crews constructed containment lines and conducted burnout operations north of Coyote Creek Road. This work will continue into operations for today and tonight. Into the night, crews conducted burnout operations to strengthen containment lines along the northwest border of the fire near Lower Coyote Creek Road. Today, additional aircraft and other resources will arrive. More resources have been assigned specifically for structure protection along SR155. Firefighters remain focused keeping the fire as small as possible.
Evacuations
The Columbia River Road corridor and Kartar Valley evacuation levels have been reduced to Level 2. Level 2 evacuation orders will also remain in place for Colville Agency, the community of Nespelem, and the SR155 corridor from Colville Agency north up to the Mission.
