Smoke relief Friday

Post by Rideback »

Alert:

'Air quality in the Methow Valley has been in the UNHEALTY to HAZARDOUS range throughout today, Sept. 9, 2022.

Through tomorrow morning, the Washington DNR Wildland Fire Meteorologist forecasts significant amounts of smoke are being funneled directly into the Methow Valley and into the Lake Chelan area.

The culprit is mid-level winds out of the north-northwest that are prevailing over the very active Pasayten Fires in the North Cascades. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8397/

Do not expect air quality conditions to improve much before tomorrow morning, when mid-level and surface winds will begin to shift more towards the northeast.

After the onset of northeasterly winds, it will take some time to clear the smoke that is stuck in the valleys, but new smoke will not be transported toward the area.

Models indicate that smoke should clear from the valleys east of the Cascades through tomorrow morning, with much improved conditions for the Methow by tomorrow afternoon at the latest.

As we progress into Saturday, deep easterly winds will begin to carry smoke from Idaho and Montana towards Washington, but impacts will not be as severe as they are today.

You will likely see at least Moderate Air Quality conditions Saturday afternoon for most of the east side of the state.

If you must be outdoors, N95 masks are available at both Twisp and Winthrop City Halls.
