White River and Irving Peak Fire Update

August 23, 2022 -- 9:00 AM

Quick Facts: Personnel: 596, Crews: 15, Helicopters: 3, Engines: 17, Dozers: 2, Water Tenders: 7

White River Fire

Acres: 960 | Contained: 1% Cause: Lightning

Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles northwest of Plain, WA

Irving Peak Fire

Acres: 1,057 Contained: 1% Cause: Lightning

Location: Approximately 16 miles northwest of Plain, WA

Highlights: The White River and Irving Peak Fires were started by lightning on August 11 and are burning on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest, approximately 15 miles northwest of Plain, WA.

Operations: Firefighters are making progress along Forest Road 6504 connecting the dozer line with the handline along the southeastern edge of the Irving Peak Fire. Crews will continue chipping and brushing there. Three masticators are also operating on Forest Road 6504 grinding trees and brush into smaller pieces, greatly increasing the rate of firefighters’ work. Chipping work continues on Sears Creek Road, and has finished on Windmill Lane southeast of the White River Fire.

Evacuations: Chelan County Sheriff's office has issued a Level 3 evacuation (Go Now) for Sears Creek Road, White River Road is at a Level 2 (Be Prepared), and Little Wenatchee Road is at a Level 1 (Stay Alert). Emergency personnel are in the process of advising residents in the area. Residents of five homes were evacuated from the Sears Creek Area.

Weather: Today’s weather will have a bit more humidity and moisture. As the day warms up, there is an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Fire Behavior: Conditions will still support fire spread, but winds will be light and will not drive significant growth. With the lack of stronger winds, fire behavior will be terrain driven rather than wind driven. There is still the potential for pockets of active fire behavior on both the White River and Irving Peak fires as they are burning in dry timber litter.

Closures: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has issued a closure order for the White River Fire area: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO ... 054295.pdf

Additionally, it is recommended to avoid recreating in the Little Wenatchee and White River Road (FS Roads 6500 and 6400) areas.

Restrictions: Campfires are not allowed anywhere within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Stage 2 Restrictions are now in effect for the entire forest, including campgrounds and wilderness areas: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/okawen/a ... ev3_053600

Pacific Crest Trail: Smoke is visible from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). While there is currently no impact to the PCT, hikers should be aware that Little Wenatchee Ford and White River Trailheads are closed and cannot be used to access the PCT.

Safety Message: Firefighter crews and equipment are busy in and around the fire area. Helicopters and water-scooping aircraft are periodically active on Lake Wenatchee. Be prepared to clear areas of the lake and stay close to shore when scooper aircraft are operating. Please avoid all areas where people and equipment are working. Be cautious and continue to do all you can to prevent wildfires.

Current Situation
Total Personnel 602
Size 1,550 Acres
Percent of Perimeter Contained 1%
Estimated Containment Date Sunday October 30th, 2022 approx. 12:00 AM

Fuels Involved
Primary fuels on slopes and ridges are mixed conifer litter and understory. There is heavy dead/down fuel loading from previous disturbance (insects, disease, and blowdown). Timber fuels are often interspersed by avalanche chutes filled with grass and brush. Fuels in valley bottoms are composed of grass and riparian hardwoods.

Significant Events
Continued warm weather with a partly cloudy sky, light wind, and smoky conditions will likely inhibit fire behavior potential again today. Surface fire continues to flank with flare-up's along ridge top and midslope locations, with backing fire toward the White River area in timber litter fuels with concentrations of dead and down logs. Backing spread on steep slopes is being accelerated by rolling materials.

White River and Irving Peak Fire Update
August 15, 2022 -- 8:30 AM

White River Fire

Acres: 516 | Contained: 0%
Cause: Lightning

Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles northwest of Plain, WA

Irving Peak Fire

Acres: 160 | Contained: 0%
Cause: Lightning

Location: Approximately 16 miles northwest of Plain, WA
Highlights: Lightning storms that passed over the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest this past week ignited several wildfires in the Wenatchee River Ranger District. Smoke from the fires is highly visible in the Lake Wenatchee area, and recreationists are advised to stay away from the Little Wenatchee and White River Roads where these fires are burning. Aviation resources are utilizing and scooping from Lake Wenatchee; we ask water recreationists to please clear the area and stay away from these aircraft as they work.

Operations: Yesterday, moderate fire activity occurred as additional resources arrived to support firefighting efforts. Aviation efforts were put on hold in the morning due to poor visibility and smoke conditions. Crews on the White River Fire continue to assess and prepare structure protection along Sears Creek Road (FS 6404) and White River Road. Dozers will be working on spur roads off the FS 6404 Road to open and improve access to the fire area. Two aircraft are currently assigned to the incident while other initial attack aircraft are assisting; fire managers continue to gain intel from these resources to assess safe containment options as they coordinate with local, county, and state personnel. Today, Irving peak fire gained more resources; it is staffed with multiple engines, hand crews, and heavy equipment. Crews focus on scouting potential control lines and begin structure protection along Little Wenatchee Road (FS Road 6500). A Type 2 Incident Management Team has been ordered to manage the White River and Irving Peak Fires.

Evacuations: Chelan County has issued a Level 3 evacuation (Go Now) for Sears Creek Road, White River Road is at a Level 2 (Be Prepared), and Little Wenatchee Road is at a Level 1 (Stay Alert). Emergency personnel are in the process of advising residents in the area. Residents of five homes were evacuated from the Sears Creek Area.

To sign up for the Chelan County emergency alert system, please visit https://public.alertsense.com/signup/?regionid=1184.

Weather: A high-pressure system continues to build, resulting in hotter and drier conditions throughout the week. Temperatures today will be warming to around 82 degrees with northwest winds from 5-10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph in the afternoon.

Closures: An area closure is pending. It is recommended that the public avoid recreating in the Little Wenatchee and White River Road (FS Roads 6500 and 6400) areas. The Pacific Crest Trail is not affected by this fire.

Restrictions: Campfires are not currently allowed anywhere within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Stage 2 Restrictions are now in effect for the entire forest, including campgrounds and wilderness areas.
