“Dry” thunderstorms forecast for Cub Creek 2, Cedar Creek fire areas.
A weak low pressure system near the coast is creating conditions that are ripe for the development of thunderstorms in the Winthrop and Twisp areas.
Jack Messick, incident meteorologist for the #CubCreek2, has been watching regional and local patterns and said any thunderstorm over the fire areas could cause issues.
“Dry thunderstorms usually have really gusty winds; we’re looking at up to 45 mph.,” he said. “They have an updraft of air on one side and a down draft on the other. The down draft hits the ground and has to go somewhere so it spreads out in every direction. These winds can be enhanced by ridges and valleys that channel the direction and flow.”
Firefighters on the Cub Creek 2 Fire have been working to strengthen containment lines, but a significant wind event certainly would test them.
Messick said even though it’s referred to as a dry thunderstorm, that doesn’t mean there will be zero rain and there’s often lightening associated with these storms as well.
“We could get some rain, but not enough to change how dry our fuels are,” he said. “Less than a tenth of an inch of rain and it’s just like nothing happened or the lightning could lead to more (fires).”
Fire managers have identified personnel assigned to the Cub Creek 2 Fire that would assist local Forest Service and Fire Department resources if need for initial attack on any new starts in the area.
Forecasters are calling for the potential storms to impact the area between 4 and 11 p.m.

Cedar Creek Fire - August 3

Our hotshot crew just finished hand ignition along the Thompson Ridge road below Gobblers Knob, from the 4410 road across the 500 road. This is to create a black line more slowly. Crews and engines are deployed along 4410 road to hold the fire. Expect interior burning to increase as the day heats up.

The Methow Valley saw some relief from smoke impacts as the inversion lifted by early afternoon. As long term smoke will continue, we would like to encourage communities to refer to the air quality information resources for daily Air Quality Index’s (AQI) and provide guidance for preventative health measures.

Yesterday firefighters progressed along FS Road 37 with heavy equipment as they worked to extend their containment features on the Eastern flank towards Baldy Pass. On FS Road 39 similar operations will continue as firefighters work north towards Tiffany Springs. Along the southern perimeter firefighters completed hose lays and dozer line down to Bear Creek in anticipation for any spread to the South. Today firefighters will continue to scout for additional containment features along ridge systems from Starvation Mountain up to Old Baldy. Containment lines on the west flank continue to hold as firefighters will be mopping up to Sweetgrass Butte. In the northern portion of the fire resources will be utilizing heavy equipment up the Chewuch River along FS Road 51 to create a containment lines up to Farewell Creek. Resources within the Brevicomis summer homes will continue mop up operations and provide structure protection.

Today at 6:00 pm a community meeting will be held in Twisp at Twisp River Park 325 North Lincoln St.

Tonight’s meeting will have speakers from both incidents to provide information these events will also be streamed via Facebook.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Morning Update
August 3, 2021
Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

https://fb.watch/798wEr6zQ1/

Winthrop, WA — The Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and public and private lands within Okanogan County. These fires are being managed by Great Basin Incident Management Team 1.

Fire Information Line: Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires: 509-557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm)

Fire Weather: Residual moisture from Sunday's rain showers helped moderate fire behavior on Monday, but warm temperatures have returned. Today will be hotter and drier, with unstable air conditions in the afternoon. There is the potential for thundershowers over the fire area this afternoon and evening. Erratic outflow winds are possible.

Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 50,406 acres and is 23% contained.

Public Meeting: A public meeting hosted by the Southwest Area and Great Basin IMTs was held yesterday evening at Mack Lloyd Park in Winthrop. The Incident Commander and Operations Section Chief for each team gave updates on their fires. Okanogan County Emergency Manager Maurice Goodall discussed evacuations. The teams had their Incident Meteorologist, Fire Behavior Analyst, Air Quality Specialist, and Medical Unit Leader on hand to answer questions. Representatives from the US Forest Service, Okanogan County Fire District 6, and Washington DNR were also present.

A second public meeting will be held this evening, Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at 6 pm in Twisp River Park, 325 North Lincoln Street, Twisp.

At 12:30 pm, firefighting helicopters lifted off but were forced to return to base because of poor visibility. By 2:00 pm, the skies cleared, and four firefighting helicopters went into service.

Fire behavior picked up on Vasiliki Ridge, but firefighters were able to hold the fire in check. Helicopters supported crews on the ground with multiple bucket-drops of water. Today a Type 1 Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter will be used to drop fire retardant to reinforce the indirect line that has been constructed from near the Pine Fir Campground to the ridgetop.

Wood chipping is complete in the Vasiliki Ridge – Silver Star Creek area. Four chipping crews with large commercial woodchippers are in service along WA-20, disposing of slash generated as firefighters worked to protect homes near the fire's edge. Chipping is a critical piece of the work which must be completed in order to open WA-20 and as such is a very high priority.

Firefighters continue to do mop-up and fall hazards trees along the WA-20 Corridor. A concentration of hazard trees (a snag patch) around Free Stone continues to be an area of concern. Hazard trees inside the perimeter could potentially fall over the line and provide a path for fire to escape. The snag patch is too dangerous for firefighters to enter, so crews are installing water sprinkler systems to mitigate spotting potential where snags threaten the line.

Isolated areas of heat remain below Lucky Jim Bluff. Crews will continue to mop up the line and hope to be able to call this area contained in the near future.

Along WA-20 where the fire perimeter is contained (black line on the map), excess equipment is being collected and returned to base (back-hauled). The hose brought back to fire camp will be straightened, rolled, and returned to a regional warehouse known as a cache, where it will be made ready for use on the next fire.

Crews continue to strengthen containment lines around Gobblers Knob and the slop over on the 4410 Road west of Pine Forest. Pockets of unburned fuel remain mid-slope on Gobblers Knob. Hot Shots lite fuels along the base of the hill and an Unmanned Ariel System (UAS) equipped with a Plastic Sphere Dispenser (PSD) was used to spread fire higher up. This will keep the burn at low intensity and preserve as much timber value as possible. This burn operation will clean up Gobblers Knob and reduce the risk to the Pine Forest community.

Crews are going direct along the 4410 Road and up to Thompson Ridge. A burn operation is being evaluated to connect the Valentine Creek dozer line to the Little Bridge fire scar.

Delancy Fire: Delancy fire remained within its current perimeter. Fire crews working in the Vasiliki Ridge – Silver Star Creek area were able to monitor the fire from their location. The estimated size of the Delancy Fire remains at 223 acres.

Resources: Total personnel - 822: 3 - type 1 hotshot crews, 11 - type 2 hand crews, 2 - type 2 initial attack hand crews, 2 - camp crews, 8 - type 1 (heavy) helicopters, 1 - type 2 helicopter, 2 - type 3 helicopter, 70 - engines, 6 - dozers, 5 – tactical water tenders, 22 - water tenders,1 - masticator, 2 - skidgen, 4 – skidders, 4 – excavators, 4 – feller bunchers, and 186 line supervision and support personnel.

Closures: For the safety of the firefighters and aircraft fighting these fires, a temporary flight restriction (TFR) has been placed over the area. Please consult the “Notice to Airmen” (NOTAM) for specifics. Wildfires are a “No Drone Zone” and any drones sighting in a TFR will immediately impede aerial firefighting resources and delay suppression actions.

State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) remains closed at milepost 185 (7 miles west of Winthrop) to milepost 165 to all traffic due to fire activity.

The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has implemented a Fire Emergency Area Closure as of July 22nd, 2021. The Closure includes facilities, roads, and trails. The Closure may be viewed in its entirety at the “Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires 2021” Facebook page.

The Forest Service Fire Emergency Area Closure is separate from the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) closure of portions of State Route 20 and may change or be lifted at various times depending on operational needs. WSDOT is working closely with the Forest Service and Okanogan County to identify where fire activity and firefighting operations warrant closure.

Evacuation Information: The Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM) continues to reevaluate evacuation levels. For the most up to date evacuation levels see the OCEM’s website above. Residents entering Evacuation Level 3 areas need to slow down and watch for firefighters and equipment in roadways.

Air Quality: Thick smoke settled throughout much of eastern Washington yesterday and especially in the Methow and Okanogan Valleys leading to widespread poor air quality. Today winds from the NW will develop in the afternoon moving smoke to the east and air quality conditions will improve for areas west of the fires during the day. Mazama, Pateros, and Chelan should benefit in particular. Warming temperatures will lift smoke so all should expect periods in the afternoon with somewhat better air quality. Smoke accumulates again this evening.

Fire Restrictions: Campfire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are prohibited throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including developed campgrounds and congressionally designated Wilderness — call local ranger district offices for more information. https://tinyurl.com/yby4oysq

8/3 Smoke Outlook for Cedar Creek, Delancy and Cub Creek 2 Area

Fire Hot temperatures are expected today with a heat advisory in effect for the area. Sun and heat on the fires mean they will burn actively. The possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon could bring brisk and erratic winds. Cedar Creek is now 50,406 acres (+1635) and 23% contained. Cub Creek 2 is 58,793 (+0) and 24% contained. Smoke Air quality improved late in the day yesterday and we are still seeing benefits from that improvement this morning. Air quality remains impaired but not as bad as it's been. Areas near the fires - Winthrop, Twisp, and Mazama - will continue to be smoky at times, but overall conditions around the forecast area are expected to be better than yesterday. Health Please remember to check with your doctor if you're feeling effects from the smoke such as chest tightness or difficulty breathing. Some health effects from breathing smoke can be

delayed by a day or more.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Morning Update
August 2, 2021

Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
Winthrop, WA — The Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and public and private lands within Okanogan County. These fires are being managed by Great Basin Incident Management Team 1.
Fire Information Line: Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires: 509-557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm)
Fire Weather: Today marks the beginning of a drying trend. Humidity values will be 30 to 40 percent drier. In the morning winds will be light and terrain driven, becoming breezy in the afternoon, from the northwest. Wind gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour are possible in the Highway 20 corridor and along exposed ridgetops and aligned drainages. The warming trend will continue Wednesday and Thursday and will bring the potential for gusty winds.
Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 48,871 acres and is 23% contained.
Light precipitation over the fire yesterday, ranging from 0.15 -.25”, resulted in more favorable conditions for suppression actions.
Crews working in the Vasiliki Ridge area on the far northwest corner of the fire will continue to improve the saw line line that runs east from near the Lone Fir Campground and upslope into an avalanche chute. If visibility improves enough to allow helicopters to fly, fire line managers will consider the use of retardant bucket drops to further strengthen the control line. Slash chipping operations have been completed and the chipping equipment and crew will continue working further east on the WA-20 Corridor towards Sun Mountain.
Mop-up along the north and northeast flanks is progressing well, and evacuation levels were downgraded for three subdivisions in the Mazama-Wintrop area from Level 3 to Level 2. At Free Stone, firefighters have completed a control line to contain the remaining hot spots. The line has been plumbed, meaning that fire hoses have been stretched along the line and water is available for suppression should the fire flair up. Engines are stationed in the area to provide protection for structures.
In locations along the WA-20 corridor where the fire perimeter is fully contained (black line on the map), excess hoses, pumps and other firefighting equipment will be collected and returned to base.
Last night an unmanned ariel system (UAS) equipped with an infrared camera flew the fire perimeter in the Gobblers Knob and Thompson Ridge area. The information the UAS was able to capture will be used to improve mapping in the area.
A direct line was constructed around the slop over at the 4410 Road west of Pine Forest. The 4410 has now been linked to other roads and dozer lines to connect to Thompson Ridge. This will become a control feature to prevent fire from moving toward the Twisp River Drainage. Fire crews are working up the Twisp River to re-open a dozer line from the 2018 Crescent Mountain fire to create an indirect control feature that will connect the Little Bridge and Crescent Mountain fire scars, and tie into natural barriers up on the main ridge above the Twisp River. This effort is to create a contingency line on the south flank of the fire.
A spike (remote) camp is being established at the Early Winter Campground on the northern end of the fire. Locating firefighters in this camp will position them nearer to the areas where they are working. This will reduce travel time to the fire line and allow the crews to spend more time on the fire and less time driving.
Public Meetings: Two public meetings will be hosted by the Southern Area IMT 2 and Great Basin IMT 1.
Representatives from Southern Area and Great Basin IMTs will provide detailed updates on the Cub Creek 2, Cedar Creek, and Delancy Fires. Okanogan County Emergency Manager Maurice Goodall will discuss evacuation status, and spokespersons from the US Forest Service and other community representatives will be available to take your questions.
The first meeting will be held Monday, August 2, 2021, at 6 pm in Mack Lloyd Park next to the Red Barn at 51 State Route 20, Winthrop. The following night, on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at 6 pm a meeting will be held in Twisp River Park, 325 North Lincoln Street in Twisp. Both meetings will feature the same speakers and provide the same information.

The Wildland Incident Management Team has recommended reducing the Level 3 "evacuate now" order for the Poorman zone to Level 2 "be ready."

The other zones in Twisp River remain Level 3 "Evacuate Now" due to the limited egress for up canyon residents while firefighters are working around the fire on the 4410 Road.

Cub Creek 2 Fire-2021

#Cubcreek2 operational update for tonight
The fire is 58,793 acres and 24% contained. 608 personnel.
Scattered precipitation, wide-spread cloud cover, and elevated humidity helped minimize fire behavior. Highest amount of rainfall recorded was .29 of an inch. For tonight, showers and thunderstorms are predicted.
Due to another day of poor air quality, aviation operations were hampered.
Firefighters mitigated hazardous trees by removing them along Eightmile Creek Road up to Honeymoon Campground in anticipation of easterly growth.
On the east side of the fire, fuel reduction work continued along FS roads 37 and 39 to strengthen and utilize as a containment line.
Scouting for potential fireline locations utilizing roads and ridges occurred today in Bear Creek, South Beaver Creek and West Fork Salmon Creek.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Evening Update
August 1, 2021

Cooler temperatures, moisture, and even a little bit of rain last night and today on the Cedar Creek Fire calmed fire activity and offered fire personnel opportunities to attack the fire directly in somekey areas. However, there is still a considerable amount of fire on the ground and the fire is still less than 20% contained. In many places, the fire is smoldering and creeping, and fire activity will most certainly increase again when temperatures rise and fuels dry out.
Fire Weather: Tonight, skies will be partly cloudy. There is a chance for early evening rain showers over the fire area. Temperatures will range from 57 to 63 degrees, and relative humidity will run as high as 75 percent. Winds will be mild from the northwest at 6 to 11 miles per hour, with gusts to 20.
Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 45,719 acres and is 17% contained.
At the northwest corner of the incident, the fire is on Vasiliki Ridge; this is exceptionally steep and rugged country. Firefighters were able to construct a fire-line by clearing a section of lighter fuels and tying it into an avalanche chute and rock scree. Fire line managers are assessing the possibility of using helicopters to drop retardant in the fire’s path to slow its progress. Favorable weather conditions are allowing firefighters to evaluate options to use a more direct attack to keep the fire out of Early Winters Creek.
The fire is contained along much of the WA-20 Corridor. Crews are mopping up fire line from just east of Varden Creek to the Sun Mountain Lodge. However, hot spots still exist in the Free Stone area. Crews are working to improve the line and get more depth to secure this area.
In the Sun Mountain and Little Bridge Creek area the fire has burned through the Graff Creek drainage and around Gobblers Knob. The fire burned across the 4410 Road west of Pine Forest, but firefighters were able to catch the slop over using heavy equipment.
The 4410 Road had been a part of the primary containment line. Now that the 4410 is compromised, fire line managers are working to link other roads and dozer lines together to form a continuous line to the Little Bridge Creek burn scar. Once this line is completed, it will give fire crews a defensive feature to work off of to keep the fire from reaching the Twisp River drainage.
During last night’s response to burning on the Gobblers Knob, the Southwest IMT sent a Hot Shot crews and a task force of fire apparatus from the Cub Creek 2 fire to support firefighters on Cedar Creek. Crews from the day shift stayed on the line and worked through the night. The night shift left camp early to join the fight. Volunteer and career firefighters from Okanogan County Fire District 6 mobilized to assist with evacuations and then formed a strike team of engines that patrolled resident’s properties through the night to provide structure protection.

Resources: Total personnel - 830: 4 - type 4 hotshot crews, 11 - type 2 hand crews, 2 - type 2 initial attack hand crews, 2 - camp crews, 8 - type 1 (heavy) helicopters, 1 - type 2 helicopter, 2 - type 3 helicopter, 68 - engines, 6 - dozers, 22 - water tenders,1 - masticator, 2 - skidgen, 4 – skidders, 4 – excavators, 4 – feller bunchers, and 186 line supervision & support personnel.
Air Quality: Air quality remains very impaired throughout the Methow Valley and smoke has now traveled south to affect Chelan, Wenatchee, and beyond. The Okanogan Valley is not getting a break from the smoke either as fires in Canada and on the Colville reservation mean smoke comes their way no matter which way the wind blows. Smoke accumulated throughout the Columbia Basin overnight and most monitors east of the Cascades are showing impaired air quality. Areas that have avoided smoke impacts thus far in the fire season are now experiencing impaired conditions.
