Smoke Outlook for 8/5
Fire
Hot, dry, and windy weather today means the fires are
expected to be active and the possibility of fire spread when
winds increase in the afternoon is a risk. Cedar Creek is now
52,498 acres (+468) and 25% contained. Cub Creek 2 is
59,377 acres (+680) and 24% contained. Delancy remains at
223 acres.
Smoke
Smoke impacts from the Cedar Creek, Cub Creek 2, and
Delancy fires are becoming more localized as the fires are
brought under control. Mazama, Winthrop, and Twisp will
continue to experience air quality impacts because of their
proximity to the fires although the severity of impact continues
to decrease. The afternoon wind event today, though
challenging for firefighters, will be good for air quality in the
Methow Valley.

Acres: 59,365, Percent Containment: 24%
Date/Time Detected: July 16th. 1:27 PM
Structures burned: 3
Number of Resources: 689
Cause: Under investigation
Origin/Location: 5 miles North of Winthrop, WA.
Yesterday there was increased smoke production as a result of a firing operation near Bock Creek on the west side of FS 51. The initial attack group stayed busy throughout the day supporting local fire resources on suppression efforts on fires started by the lightning on Tuesday evening. Air resources were able to successfully complete an IR (infrared) flight, which provided operations with a clear picture of where the fire is still active in the interior and on the perimeter.
Crews continued to work along the western flank and in the Sweet Grass Butte area completing mop up activities and removing hazards. Scouting continued west of FS 39 heading north to identify locations where it could be possible to complete more direct line and areas where indirect line would be more effective. Indirect line was prepped along FS 37 and hazard trees are being removed. Along the southeastern edge of the fire, crews have had great success in tying in dozer lines and are continuing to connect them into the existing road system and completing prep work adjacent to the roads.
Today’s weather has potential to cause increased fire activity with a windy, dry, cold front coming through the area. Winds are expected to pick up in the late afternoon with a possibility of dry thunderstorms.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Daily Update
August 5, 2021

Briefing Video... https://www.facebook.com/MazamaFires202 ... 6403794342

Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
Winthrop, WA — The Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and public and private lands within Okanogan County. These fires are being managed by Great Basin Incident Management Team 1.
Fire Information Line: Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires: 509-557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm)
Fire Weather: Hot and dry conditions continue for one more day. Winds will be slightly higher, starting slope and valley driven, before switching to the northwest/down valley around midday. A cold front will move through Thursday evening, bringing gust west to northwest winds overnight into Friday. There will be a small chance for showers along and behind the front, mainly for the western portion of the fire. Temperatures will be much cooler Friday going into the weekend while humidity values increase.
Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 52,498 acres and is 25% contained.
Tuesday night scattered showers fell across the fire. A few areas in the northwest corner of the fire received wetting rain (greater than 1/10 inch), while most of the southeastern area saw little precipitation. On Wednesday, the Okanagan County Communications Center reported that in 24 hours, lightning strikes in Okanogan County were responsible for 21 responses by local fire services. The team provided initial attack support to local resources on a new fire near Driveway Butte. A helicopter was deployed to assist with this start, now named the Ballard fire. Team Incident Meteorologist Steve Bodnar reported that 292 lightning strikes were recorded overnight in Okanogan County. Thunderstorms generated high winds; one weather station near Lewis Butte clocked a wind gust in the early morning hours at 63 miles per hour. Winds pushed smoke out of the area, providing clean air and good visibility. These conditions allowed firefighting aircraft to launch in the early morning, something they have been unable do for several days due to heavy smoke lingering, typically until mid-day.
Fire crews improved the containment line in the Silver Star Creek area. This line was constructed by linking a hand line, beginning at the Early Winters Creek to an avalanche chute running up the western slope of Vasiliki Ridge. Helicopters applied fire retardant on the green side (unburned side) of the line to add fire resistance. The fire has held within its current footprint. Firefighters are scouting for other natural barriers that can be used as containment features.
Wood chipping crews are making substantial progress working along WA-20. They are disposing of slash generated during suppression efforts. When all fire suppression debris is removed, the Washington Department of Transportation will evaluate the condition of the road and decide what additional work will be required (if any) before the road can reopen.
The concentration of fire-damaged trees (snag patch) at Free Stone continues to be a concern. It is currently unsafe for firefighters to enter this area to do mop up. Efforts are underway to get hazard trees on the ground so mop up can proceed. A number of fire-damaged trees near the edge of the fire line were felled for firefighter safety. Crews are mitigating the hazard of fire flaring up by using sprinklers and fire engines to cool the fire edge.
Mop up continued today below Lucky Jim Bluff. Firefighters are backhauling excess equipment off the fire line.
Crews constructed a control feature by going direct (one foot in the green, one foot in the black) at the 4410 Road and up to Thompson Ridge. Mop up on this section of line is now 50 to 100-feet deep along the perimeter. Firefighters are also building a fire line to connect the Valentine Creek dozer line to the Little Bridge fire scar.
Delancy Fire: Delancy fire showed no growth. Crews on the Vasiliki Ridge are monitoring the fire from their location. The Delancy Fire remains at 223 acres.

Resources include: 3 - type 1 hotshot crews, 10 - type 2 hand crews, 2 - type 2 initial attack hand crews, 2 - camp crews, 6 - type 1 (heavy) helicopters, 1 - type 2 helicopter, 2 - type 3 helicopter, 68 - engines, 6 - dozers, 5 – tactical water tenders, 24 - water tenders,1 - masticator, 3 - skidgen, 6 – skidders, 3 – excavators, 8 – feller bunchers,
Closures: For the safety of the firefighters and aircraft fighting these fires, a temporary flight restriction (TFR) has been placed over the area. Please consult the “Notice to Airmen” (NOTAM) for specifics. Wildfires are a “No Drone Zone” and any drones sighting in a TFR will immediately impede aerial firefighting resources and delay suppression actions.
State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) remains closed at milepost 185 (7 miles west of Winthrop) to milepost 165 to all traffic due to fire activity.
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has implemented a Fire Emergency Area Closure as of July 22nd, 2021. The Closure includes facilities, roads, and trails. For additional information visit the forest alert page at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/okawen/alerts-notices
The Forest Service Fire Emergency Area Closure is separate from the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) closure of portions of State Route 20 and may change or be lifted at various times depending on operational needs. WSDOT is working closely with the Forest Service and Okanogan County to identify where fire activity and firefighting operations warrant closure.
Evacuation Information: The Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM) continues to reevaluate evacuation levels. For the most up to date evacuation levels see the OCEM’s website above. Residents entering Evacuation Level 3 areas need to slow down and watch for firefighters and equipment in roadways.
Air Quality: Smoke impacts from the Cedar Creek, Cub Creek 2, and Delancy fires are becoming more localized as the fires are brought under control. Mazama, Winthrop, and Twisp will continue to experience air quality impacts because of their proximity to the fires although the severity of impact continues to decrease. The afternoon wind event today, though challenging for firefighters, will be good for air quality in the Methow Valley.
Fire Restrictions: Campfire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are prohibited throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including developed campgrounds and congressionally designated Wilderness — call local ranger district offices for more information. https://tinyurl.com/yby4oysq

#Cubcreek2 Lightning Map for Washington/Oregon - August 3 - 4

Lightning Map on Inciweb: https://tinyurl.com/yudmpptm
If lightning occurs inside the cloud, it is called intra-cloud lightning. This makes up about 75% of all lightning produced by a thunderstorm. If the discharge hits the ground, it’s called a cloud-to-ground strike. This makes up about 20% of the lightning. Then there’s another type of lightning that is far more powerful, one in which positive charge flows instead of electrons. It’s called a positive lightning strike.
"Positive lightning" is a net transfer of positive charge from the cloud to the ground. Positive lightning makes up less than 5% of all strikes. However, despite a significantly lower rate of occurrence, positive lightning is particularly dangerous for several reasons.
Some positive strikes can occur within the parent thunderstorm and strike the ground beneath the cloud. If you hear thunder, you are close enough to lightning flashes that you could be struck regardless of where the storm is located.
Also, positive flashes are believed to be responsible for a large percentage of forest fires and power line damage. Thus, positive lightning is much more lethal and causes greater damage than negative lightning.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires 2021

https://www.facebook.com/MazamaFires202 ... 7684460354

Here’s a video to explain how we use indirect and direct fireline to help contain the fire.
Direct line – fireline adjacent to the fires edge.
Indirect line – fireline placed a distance away from the fire edge.
On 8-3-202 We met up with firefighters from the Entiat Hotshots, a local type 1 IHC crew from the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The crew was engaged in constructing and strengthening containment lines around Gobbler’s Knob and the slop-over across the 4410 road.
The crew used chainsaws, hand tools, and guided a bulldozer to remove fuels and construct a direct fire line around the hot fire edge. Then, late last night, firefighters initiated a burnout operation and flew unmanned aircraft to drop aerial ignition devices. The ZigZag Hotshots used drip torches on the lower part of the slope, and then handed off the firing operation to the Entiat Hotshots this morning. The crews were successful bringing fire down the extremely steep slope and down to the road, which had been prepped as an indirect fire line.
The hotshot crew and several engines are monitoring and holding the fire this evening, and they will be relieved by more personnel on the night shift. If a spot fire develops on the wrong side of the line the crews are ready to rapidly extinguish them.

Smoke Outlook for 8/4
Fire
Hot temperatures are expected again today and the heat
advisory remains in effect. The fires are expected to burn
actively again today although perimeter growth is not
expected. Lightning yesterday afternoon and evening has
started some new fires. Initial attack efforts are underway as
new fires are identified. Cedar Creek remains at 50,406 acres
and 23% contained. Cub Creek 2 is 58,793 and 24% contained.
Smoke
Strong winds late in the day yesterday scoured smoke out of
the area and Wednesday morning we are experiencing some
of the best air quality we've seen around here in days. Light
winds and hot temperatures today will lead to smoke
accumulations in valleys near the fires.
Health
You can build a simple DIY air quality filter by attaching a
furnace filter to a box fan. Find instructions here:

#Cubcreek2 Good Morning from the fire

Initial attack resources from Cub Creek 2 engaged in several new wildfires Tuesday afternoon and through the night.
While portions of Winthrop and Twisp received significant rain, weather stations within the fire perimeter did not.
• Max rainfall was .06 inches with some stations reporting zero precipitation.
• This rain event is not expected to have a significant impact on the Cub Creek 2 Fire

With significant cloud to ground lightning strikes recorded, there is a high probability of more new starts today and for the next several days.

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Daily Update
August 4, 2021

Operational Brefing Video... https://www.facebook.com/MazamaFires202 ... 6883929275

Fire Weather: High pressure over Central Washington will continue to deliver very warm conditions today. Moisture from yesterday’s rain will lead to muggy conditions early in the day. Winds will be light, and terrain driven. The ridge will weaken Thursday with increasing onshore flow and deepening marine layer west of the Cascade Crest. Northwest winds will slowly increase on Thursday and become breezy late afternoon and evening. A cold front will pass over the fire Thursday night into Friday bringing increasing humidity, cooler air, and strong northwest winds. Light showers will be possible but most precipitation will be intercepted by the Cascade Crest.
Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is currently estimated at 52,030 acres and is 25% contained.
Work on Vasiliki Ridge continued as firefighters strengthened the existing control line running from Early Winter Creek and up the west slope of Vasiliki Ridge. Fire managers scouted the area to identify natural barriers that could be used to create an additional containment feature. Crew members on the ground were assisted by Air Attack, a fixed-wing aircraft primarily used to coordinate operations of firefighting aircraft in the busy airspace above an active fire, but also helpful in scouting and patrolling from the air.
Opening WA-20 is extremely important to residents and the community and is at the top of the management team's priority list. Wood chipping crews continued to work along WA-20, disposing of the considerable amount of slash generated during suppression efforts. These materials must be cleared before traffic can resume along the roadway.
A concentration of fire damaged trees exists in the Free Stone area. This section of the fire perimeter is still hot, and the number of hazard trees makes it unsafe. Firefighters instead installed water sprinkler systems to cool the area and mitigate the hazard of fire flaring up along the line.
Crews continued mop up below Lucky Jim Bluff with an eye toward securing this area so that it will not delay the reopening of WA-20.
Yesterday's burning operation was successful. An unmanned ariel system equipped with a Plastic Sphere Dispenser (PSD) was used for ariel ignition to clean up unburned fuels mid-slope at Gobblers Knob. The PSD is a device that injects glycol into a plastic sphere containing potassium permanganate, which is then expelled from the machine. This mixture of chemicals produces an exothermic reaction resulting in the ignition of fuels on the ground. By adjusting the chemical mix and the number of spheres dispensed, firefighters kept the fire at low intensity so that it consumed ground fuels but did not get hot enough to damage mature trees. By removing these pockets of unburned fuel, the risk to Pine Forest, Elbow Coulee, Newby Creek, and Little Bridge is significantly reduced.
Crews went direct (worked along the fire's edge) along 4410 Road and up to Thompson Ridge to construct a control feature. Crews are also building a control feature that will connect the Valentine Creek dozer line to the Little Bridge fire scar.
Delancy Fire: Delancy fire did not show any growth. Fire crews working on the Vasiliki Ridge can monitor the fire from their location. The estimated size of the Delancy Fire remains at 223 acres.
Public Meeting: A public meeting co-hosted by the Southwest Area and Great Basin IMTs was held yesterday evening at Twisp River Park. The Incident Commander and Operations Section Chief for each team gave updates on their fires. Okanogan County Emergency Manager Maurice Goodall discussed evacuations and Twisp Mayor Soo Ing-Moody shared a few words. Representatives from the US Forest Service, Okanogan County Fire District 6, and Washington DNR were on hand to answer questions.

Resources: Total personnel - 822: 3 - type 1 hotshot crews, 11 - type 2 hand crews, 2 - type 2 initial attack hand crews, 2 - camp crews, 8 - type 1 (heavy) helicopters, 1 - type 2 helicopter, 2 - type 3 helicopter, 70 - engines, 6 - dozers, 5 – tactical water tenders, 22 - water tenders,1 - masticator, 2 - skidgen, 4 – skidders, 4 – excavators, 4 – feller bunchers, and 186 line supervision and support personnel.
The Closure may be viewed in its entirety at the “Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires 2021” Facebook page.
Air Quality: Thick smoke settled throughout much of eastern Washington yesterday and especially in the Methow and Okanogan Valleys leading to widespread poor air quality. Today winds from the NW will develop in the afternoon moving smoke to the east and air quality conditions will improve for areas west of the fires during the day. Mazama, Pateros, and Chelan should benefit in particular. Warming temperatures will lift smoke so all should expect periods in the afternoon with somewhat better air quality. Smoke accumulates again this evening.
