Cub Creek 2 Fire Update
July 17, 2021 3:00 pm
The Cub Creek 2 Fire started at the hairpin turn of Cub Creek Road and the Chewuch River. The fire burned actively into the late nighttime hours.
Retardant from very large air tankers, water scooping/dropping planes, helicopters with buckets and various ground forces of hand crews and engines initially attacked the fire. The left flank is lined from the toe of the fire to the First Creek Road which also ties into Forest Road 140 leading to Buck Lake Campground. The north flank remains unchecked at this time. The northeast flank is backing down into the West Chewuch Road; it had crossed north of the confluence of the East and West Chewuch Road to Heaton Homestead. The fire has spotted east of Boulder Creek Road and is burning towards the north.
The following roads accessing the fire area will be closed:
• Rendezvous, Banker Pass, East and West Chewuch, and at the junction of the Forest Service Roads 39 and 37 due to down powerlines, rolling debris, and falling trees.
• Goat Creek Road at the junction of the 52 and 5225 Road
• 100 spur of West Fawn will be closed at the 5217 Road
• 100 spur of East Fawn will be closed at the 5217 Road
• 5215 Road
• 5008 Road 100 spur road in Bear Creek
• 5009 Road 100 spur road in Ramsey Creek
• 5009 Road 100 spur road in Pearrygin Creek
• 4225 Road
• 4235 Road

Jul 16, 2021, 3:03 PM Statement from WSDOT regarding Highway 20 closure

"Here at the Washington State Department of Transportation, we go to a great deal of effort to keep our roads safe and open, so when we support a road closure even for a little while, it is not done arbitrarily.

We are supporting fire response for teams with much more experience in that than WSDOT and have developed good relationships with our partners. We trust their assessment of the current fire status. We also advocate for our goal of open roads, but our common cause is safety. Right now it is simply not safe to allow traffic through this area. Fire and debris can roll down into the road at any moment. We would have to stand up a team at every Forest Service access to prevent Lookie Lous going off the highway. The area the fire is active is dense, steep wilderness so the highway lanes offer some of the only staging for fire response equipment. I will continue to provide the most timely information I can verify regarding this closure on our travel alerts page and via social media."

Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires
Cub Creek 2 Fire
Morning Update
July 17, 2021
Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
Fire Information Line - Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires: 509-557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm)

Winthrop, WA — Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in very steep and rocky terrain in heavy down fuels. A strategic operational planner has been ordered to develop a strategic and tactical level fire behavior assessment of the fires for future management.

Cedar Creek Fire is burning south and west of State Route 20. The fire is spreading very slowly in all directions. The current gusty wind conditions have had minor effects on fire behavior. On the east perimeter, the fire has spotted across the confluence of Cedar and Huckleberry Creeks. A hotshot hand crew worked with helicopter water drops to check the forward movement. The fire is holding on the Cedar Creek Trail. On the north perimeter, the fire is backing down toward State Route 20 and in some locations is 10 ft from the highway. The strategy of containment is to use indirect tactics and construct containment lines in areas with a high probability of success. Heavy equipment is continuing to deepen the prepared containment line along State Route 20 and treat fuels from the roadway. Dozer containment line constructed from other previous fires at the toe of the slope will also be opened and prepared as indirect line. Firefighters are scouting other indirect fire line opportunities in the Sandy Butte area along the ridge and near Wolf Creek. The objective is to keep the fire up the hillside away from the Valley and private property. The Cedar Creek fire is estimated at 3,696 acres.

Delancy Fire is moving west by roll-out of burning material on the steep slopes. The fire is anticipated to grow via concentrated amounts of material in draws and rock screes. Managers are evaluating values and risks. Containment opportunities are being actively scouted on the east side up Lost Creek Road. The fire is also being aerially monitored. The estimated size of this fire is approximately 130 acres.

Cub Creek 2 - Cedar Creek firefighting resources were diverted to assist in initial attack of a new fire start in the Chewuch River area yesterday. Cub Creek 2 Fire grew quickly and was last reported from the infra-red flight at midnight as 1,528 acres. Evacuations are in effect. See the Okanogan County Emergency Management Facebook page for the most up to date levels and information. Forest Service Campgrounds have been swept and closed along the river drainage. The fire is burning on Washington Department of Natural Resource and Okanogan County Fire District 6 protected lands and also the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Type 3 IC Chad Schmidt will manage the Cub Creek 2 Fire today and tonight management will transfer to Northwest Incident Management Team 8. Two divisions have been created for suppression actions. The Washington State structure strike team has been reassigned to protect properties in the new Cub Creek 2 Fire. 8 Mile Ranch is the designated staging area.

Air quality in the Valley is designated as “Moderate to Unhealthy” throughout the day until the inversion lifts. Please monitor the air quality on the incident FS page above WA Smoke Blog and take appropriate actions.

Winthrop, WA — Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in very steep and rocky terrain in heavy down fuels. Cedar Creek Fire is burning south and west of State Route 20. Heavy equipment is continuing to deepen the prepared containment line along State Route 20 and treat fuels from the roadway. Dozer containment line constructed from other previous fires at the toe of the slope will also be opened and prepped as indirect line. Firefighters are scouting other indirect line opportunities in the Sandy Butte area along the ridge and near Wolf Creek. A spot fire south of Cedar Creek was identified and ground truthed by firefighting resources. The location is in very steep terrain so helicopters will be utilized with water bucket drops to cool and stop any forward movement. The Cedar Creek fire is estimated at 2,899 acres.
The Delancy Fire is burning in very steep rocky terrain. The fire is moving by embers igniting pockets of alpine fir and torching where additional embers are then thrown into new pockets of fuel. The fire will be aerially monitored. The estimated size of this fire is approximately 39 acres.

Washington State has authorized the use of structural fire department resources to protect private property near the fires. A strike team of six engines have arrived and are working in the Mazama and Lost River areas assessing homes preparing the structures for defense.

Firefighters will remain diligent to watch for active fire behavior associated with the continued strong winds.

Crews are brushing and chipping along State Route 20 to deepen a containment line along the northern portion of the Cedar Creek Fire. (Since Cedar Creek and Varden have combined, it is now just called Cedar Creek Fire)

Winthrop, WA — Cedar Creek and Delancy Fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in very steep and rocky terrain in heavy down fuels. The Varden and Cedar Creek Fires stayed south and west of State Route 20. Winds have pushed the Varden and Cedar Creek Fires together. The merged fires will be renamed as Cedar Creek Fire. The predicted cold front has moved through the area followed by very gusty winds in some locations. Drainage and wind directions didn’t align over the fire area so fire behavior was not as robust as expected. Night shift resources were patrolling on site to observe and react to any operational needs. Other resources were identified and were on standby to respond.

A potential spot fire south of Cedar Creek was identified by the infra-red flight and will be scouted today.

The Delancy Fire received the gusty winds last night and was pushed upslope to the west.

Firefighters will remain diligent to watch for active to extreme fire behavior associated with the predicted cold front and strong winds that usually follow.

National Interagency Fire Center

NationalFireNews: The National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group, or NMAC, has elevated the National #PreparednessLevel to 5 (PL 5), due to significant fire activity occurring in multiple geographical areas, an increase in incident management team mobilization, and heavy shared resources commitment to large fires nationally.

Given the continuing hot and dry weather, the increase in initial attack and large fires in the western U.S., the decision to move to PL 5 depicts the complexity that fire managers are encountering to ensure that adequate firefighting resources are available for protection of life, property and our nation’s natural resources.

This is the earliest PL 5 in the past 10 years. In 2002, PL 5 was set on June 21 and in 2008, PL5 was set on July 1.
PL 5 is the highest level of wildland fire activity. Several geographic areas are experiencing large, complex wildland fire incidents, which have the potential to exhaust national wildland
