Haiku follows the journey of Ian Watkins, an aging Rock ‘n Roller that has lost his muse. Now he is a journalist working for a Seattle music magazine sent on a journey to interview Paul Kerrigan, one of the last surviving beat poets from the 60’s Haight Ashbury scene.
On his journey he encounters a strange cast of characters, places and experiences he has never dreamed of, and a transformative way of life involving simple living close to the land.
He is followed through the forest by the Wild People, a tribe that has chosen to live a primitive lifestyle. He meets Laura Kerrigan, Paul’s daughter, who is denying her musical talents and magic. Ian witnesses an odd mystical occurrence in the forest with Rima, Laura’s daughter.
Through all of this Ian finds a way to connect with himself that reawakens his creative flow.
I wrote the script with specific actors in mind. They all agreed to be in this film despite there being no budget so to speak. I did a Hatchfund project to raise some funding for permits, rentals etc. We filmed on 2 Nikon D800 E and ,a GoPro. We used headlamps and battery powered lights because there was no electricity and re recorded almost all of the dialogue in ADR sessions. I was DP, editor, and music director, musician, recording engineer as well as doing the foley. All in all it was a very educational experience for me as well as being great fun.Now I am working on the next script!
An aging rock and roller, a beat poet from the 60s and three strong female characters cross paths in the strikingly beautiful and wild North Cascades Mountains in Washington State. A reporter from a Seattle music magazine travels to the middle of nowhere to interview one of the last living beatniks from the days of Haight Ashbury. What he finds is not what he expected. Starring Danbert Nobacon, Donald McLane, Laura Love, Lynx Vilden, and Tara Dod.
