Jan 22 meeting went well... Now waiting for completion of document signing for American Legion to sponsor troop. Looks like they have a scout master, a couple of adult eagle scouts to help and 6-8 kids. More later.

American Legion Post 0143 Methow Valley might like to have scouts use our hall for purposes of scouting.

When I think about it, I haven't purchased a tent in over twenty years and a sleeping bag in nearly as long.

One other suggestion: when they get ramped up, we should put together a "lending library" of appropriate books for them. Some of the books I'd recommend are:

Cascade-Olympic Natural History (Dan Matthews). The only field guide you'll need or want 99 percent of the time.
NOLS Cookery (Claudia Pearson). Not just the recipes but superb sections on food planning and leave-no-trace food prep.
Be Expert With Map and Compass (Bjorn Kjellstrom).

Ray, I have a couple old. - but still useable - tents and old sleeping pads.

I think I may have maybe a stove and cook gear, too. Lemme look…..

If you hear when they get a local troop going, please let me know.

I reached out to Bruce this evening. He said they are still working through all of the bureaucracy to getting themselves official, but will be in a position to accept donations soon.

Unfortunately a lot of my surplus backpacking gear was lost in the 2021 Cub Creek 2 Fire... but there are still some goodies floating around that would be helpful. I know that in these decadent times finding high-quality basic backpacking gear at a reasonable price is pretty tough.

Well, I've got three Snow Peak canister stoves and a few small cookpots in various conditions (from never used to infrequently used to lived in) that could use a new home. Just let me know. Probably there are some old MSR stoves (white gas) around here too that would need an overhaul but then would be good to go.

I'd recommend the Snow Peaks just because with the MSR the risk of someone inexperienced burning the forest down are probably just too damned high. The Snow Peaks are fine for boiling water for a couple of hungry kids.

Copied from the methownet BB...

I love that they got "Troop 509" designation! :-)

They will also need backpacking gear donations...
And I bet cash donations will also work... ;)

Boy Scout Uniform Shirts Needed

A new Boy Scout Troop is being formed in the Valley. We are looking for used scout or leader uniform shirts that you may have. Most troops have a uniform exchange program and these shirts are re-used as scouts grow. If you have any your donation would be appreciated. Our unit application (troop 509) will be submitted this month. Also, if you have boys in the sixth grade and up who would be interested let me know as we are planning an introduction event for prospective scouts in the next month or so.
