Crews chipping and clearing on the FS 39 Road will continue to work until the fire is fully lined.

Please check closure information on the websites below as recensions become possible in the coming weeks. Daily communication with British Columbia fire officials is ongoing.

Crater Creek Fire Update

August 21, 2023

Colville, WA: The fire is burning in remote and rugged terrain with poor access, it is not currently threatening critical infrastructure or municipal watershed integrity. A confine/contain suppression strategy is being implemented, including the improvement of old dozer line and fuel breaks from past fires. Clearing and chipping operations on the FS 39 Road are continuing today, boosting the strength of the southern containment line. Scouting and indirect line building missions are being conducted on the eastern side of the containment area to aid along the eastern perimeter. Acreage is less than previously estimated due to more accurate mapping.

Firefighter and public safety are the highest priorities. Please check up to date road closure information on the websites below. Communication with British Columbia fire officials is ongoing.

Weather: The high today is 66 degrees with a minimum humidity of 24 percent. A low-pressure system dropping off the Washington coast will draw moisture from remnants of Hurricane Hilary late afternoon and tonight. As a result, an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms, along with high humidity recovery, is expected. Winds will be out of the southwest, with gusts up to 25 mph.

KHQ...

OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. — The Crater Creek fire, that has burned an estimated 54,000 acres in British Columbia, has entered into Okanogan County.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources closed the northern block of the Loomis Natural Resources Conservation Area effective immediately as a Canadian wildfire approached the boarder.

It advanced into Washington on Aug. 18 into the general area between SnowSnow Mountain and Hurley Peak.

The fire started on July 22 by a lightning strike and has been burning in steep and dangerous terrain. This has made it challenging for response efforts and posing a significant risk to responder safety on the ground.

The Okanogan County Emergency Management is monitoring the fire and is in contact with DNR, US Forest Service and Loomis Fire Department.

The winds, as of last night, are pushing the fire at the North North West and are predicted to stay that way through Sunday afternoon.

If you live near this fire, Okanogan County Emergency Management advises everyone to continuously check DNR and USFS websites for area closures

If you live in the areas of Chopaka Valley, Toats Coulee and Loomis you should be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to evacuate, if needed.

The strong winds from the north are expected to bring the fire toward the Loomis NRCA.

Up-to-date information on the Crater Creek fire, including photos and maps, can be found via the BC Wildfire Service website.
