Here's an article by social psychologist Jon Haidt making the case that cell phone use is creating mental health issues in children. The case that children are vulnerable is because their regulatory mechanisms of the prefrontal cortex have not yet fully developed.

But, don't all addictions come with a cost? My hope is that this research expands to adults.

Mental- health problems had recently gotten much worse. Even when students arrived for sixth grade, coming out of elementary school, many of them were already anxious and depressed. And many, already, were addicted to their phones".
