Summit Trail Fire Update 8-27
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 12 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – Cloudy weather helped to moderate fire behavior yesterday, but pockets of unburned fuel exposed to wind and sun are becoming receptive to burning. Firefighters will use helicopters where necessary to drop water to slow the fire and keep it within containment lines.

Yesterday firefighters successfully joined several sections of completed fire line and conducted small-scale burning operations to remove unburned fuels near fire lines on the northern and northeastern flanks. Firefighters continued to mop-up and patrol on the southeast, south and southwestern flanks, and to retrieve firefighting equipment from the Twin Lakes area.

Crews will continue to work on direct and indirect fire line on the north flank of the fire. A national guard crew is working on gridding and mop up operations from the completed line that is on the northeast flank of the fire.

A cold front passed over the area last night that brough slightly cooler and windier weather. Firefighters will monitor weather and fuel conditions for opportunities to burn small areas to strengthen containment lines. Smoke may be visible from these operations. Work is underway to improve roads in the Lynx Mountain area to be used as containment lines.

On all unlined portions of the fire, the strategy is to build fire line as close to the fire’s edge as possible, and to strengthen these lines with small-scale burning where it can be effective.

The Colville Reservation reopened to industrial activities and the general public this morning at 12:01 a.m.

While current weather conditions provide respite from the extreme fire potential present in northeast Washington, the forest can quickly dry out again in the many weeks of fire season ahead. Please continue to do all you can to prevent wildfires.

Smoke: Current weather conditions will moderate smoke impacts throughout the area today.

Summit Trail Fires Update for August 26
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 25 min. ago
Inchelium, WA – Northwest Incident Management Team 7 assumed command of the Summit Trail Fire today at 7:00 a.m. The Team is working with current firefighters and members of the Washington State National Guard to implement firefighting operations.

Yesterday, on the south and west portions of the fire, firefighters continued mop up operations, cooling off burned areas up to 150 feet into the fire from containment lines. Fire crews also continued monitoring and patrolling around the fire perimeter for any new hot spots, and began backhauling pumps and hoses used earlier in suppression activities.

The overall tactics for the northern and eastern flanks continued to focus on using heavy equipment to construct direct fireline, building handline, as well as a contingent of engines for mop up. Hand crews and dozers, supported by bucket drops from a large, Type I helicopter, improved containment lines in preparation for burning operations in upper Stall Creek and along Midslope Road down to Hall Creek. East and west along Onion Ridge, firefighters continued to construct direct containment lines where possible. Indirect lines were established in preparation for possible burnout operations where terrain and conditions were less favorable. West of Bear Springs, crews monitored fire activity as it slowly backed down to Hall Creek Road.

Today, sunshine will bring warmer temperatures to the region, with highs expected in the low 80’s. There is a chance of rain this evening into Friday morning. Firefighters plan to complete containment line preparation on Bittefoot Mountain and will monitor weather and fuel conditions for opportunities to burn small areas to strengthen the lines. Smoke may be visible from these areas.

The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation announced that the Colville Reservation will reopen to industrial activities and the general public on Friday, August 27, 2021 at 12:01 am.

Summit Trail Fire Update for August 25
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 3 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12 and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. The fire has burned 45,554 acres and is now at 43 percent containment.

Northwest Incident Management Team 7 will take command of the Summit Trail Fire tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. NW Team 7, led by Incident Commander Jason Loomis, will shadow outgoing NW Team 10 today to gain intelligence and ensure a smooth transition.

Yesterday, on the south and west portions of the fire, firefighters continued mop up operations, mopping up 150 feet from the containment lines. Fire crews continue monitoring and patrolling those lines around the fire perimeter for any hot spots. Crews began backhauling pumps and hoses as they completed their work around the fire. The overall tactics for the northern and eastern perimeters focus on using heavy equipment to install direct fireline and engines to mop up. Hand crews and dozers, supported by bucket drops from a Type I helicopter, improved containment lines in preparation for burning operations in upper Stall Creek and along the Midslope Road down to Hall Creek. East and west along Onion Ridge, firefighters went direct with containment lines when conditions were favorable. When less favorable, indirect lines were established in preparation for possible burnout operations. West of Bear Springs, crews monitored fire activity as it slowly backed down to Hall Creek Road. Firefighters working on the Summit Trail Fire assisted the Colville Agency and responded to one Initial Attack, called the 23 Mile Fire, northwest of Cody Butte. The fire is two acres in size and resources on the scene were able to contain the fire. Another day of sunshine will bring warmer temperatures to the region, with highs expected in the 70’s. Members of the Washington National Guard will be integrating into firefighting crews to assist with operational tactics along Sitdown Creek. Firefighters will complete containment line preparation on Bitterfoot Mountain and monitor weather and fuel conditions for opportunities to burn small areas to strengthen lines. Smoke may be visible from these areas.

The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation announced that the Colville Reservation will reopen to industrial activities and the general public on Friday, August 27, 2021 at 12:01 am. For more information about the Colville Indian Tribes, visit https://www.colvilletribes.com/.

Northwest Team 10 Incident Commander Alan Lawson would like to thank The Colville Confederated Tribes, Department of Natural Resources, our cooperators, stakeholders, and the community of Inchelium, for their cooperation in this firefighting effort. Special thanks to the Inchelium School, Inchelium Community Center, and Inchelium Campus of Spokane Community College for allowing the team to use their facilities as our Incident Command Post. Although we are already in a difficult fire season, especially with COVID-19 restrictions, it is the cooperation such as we have experienced here that has enabled us to meet firefighting objectives in a safe and efficient manner.

Summit Trail Fire Daily Update for August 22
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 2 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12 and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. Terrain, wind, and topography of the area have challenged suppression efforts; however, firefighters are using direct handline, dozer line, and defensive burning to minimize fire spread.

The Washington National Guard (WNG) is now mobilizing several hand crews to assist firefighters on the ground. While mobilized, the WNG will merge with NW Team 10, and serve under the direction of the Incident Commander Al Lawson. Service members train for this mission every year and they are proud to protect and serve their neighbors and communities during wildfire season.

Yesterday, firefighters patrolled the fire’s perimeter and reinforced control lines, mopping up several hundred feet within containment lines throughout much of the south and west portions of the fire. Around the north and east sides of the fire, hand crews and dozers constructed direct fire lines along Stall Creek to Hall Creek Road. A landing, to temporarily store cut logs, was constructed along Hall Creek Road. Masticators were used to improve containment lines along Bear Springs Road and Brush Mountain. The 1,334 acre Brush Mountain spot fire is now fully contained. Crews continue to seek opportunities for line construction from Bitterfoot Mountain, southwest to Summit Trail. Low clouds and poor weather kept helicopters grounded throughout the day.

Today, seasonally cool temperatures and high humidity should keep fire behavior moderated, but gusty winds will aid in drying grasses and other fine fuels. Firefighters will build containment lines directly on the fire’s edges wherever possible and bring disconnected sections together from Boss Creek north to Lynx Creek. Elsewhere, firefighters will scout for opportunities to build direct fire line to secure the Midslope Road north to Hall Creek Road. Structural firefighters will provide point protection (improving defensible space around property and structures) and improve control lines around the Brush Mountain spot fire.

Summit Trail Evacuations: Evacuation levels are subject to change. For more information about evacuations, call the Colville Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 or (800) 551-5800. These areas are now in a Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready): Residences along Spring Creek Road and Barnaby Creek Road. Residences from LaFleur Meadows, including Hall Creek Road south of Bear Springs Road to Lynx Creek Road’s junction with Hall Creek Road. Intersection of BIA Road 1053 and Lynx Creek Road east to the intersection with Hall Creek Road.

Evacuation Shelter: Following the reduction in evacuation levels, the shelter located at the Inchelium Longhouse and Community Center in now on standby, should it be needed.

Closures: The Colville Reservation, closed to the general public, has an Industrial Fire Precaution Level IV (General Shutdown), which closes all forest roads to the public. State and county improved roads (with a paved or gravel surface) remain open. For more information about the Colville Indian Tribes, visit https://www.colvilletribes.com/.

Summit Trail Fire Daily Update for August 21
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 12 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12 and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. Terrain, wind, and vegetation type have challenged suppression efforts; however, firefighters are utilizing handline, dozer line, and defensive burning to minimize fire spread.

Cooler temperatures and rain showers continue to subdue the fire, allowing crews to take a more direct attack approach on some of the less active areas of the fire. As a result, constructing fire line near the fire’s edge limits the number of acres burned. The 400 acre reduction from yesterday’s update in total acreage burned is due to more accurate mapping.

Yesterday, firefighters patrolled the fire’s perimeter and fortified containment lines around the south and west portions. Hand crews, supported by a Type I helicopter, worked to control a slop-over (fire edge that crosses a control line or natural barrier intended to contain the fire) on the line west of South Seventeen Mile Mountain. Around the north and east sides of the fire, work was ongoing strengthening containment lines on the existing road systems. Dozers strengthened containment lines along Grizzly Trail Road, hazard trees were removed along Hall Creek Road north to Stall Creek, and masticators, which turn large pieces of wood into chips, cleared debris along Bear Spring Road.

Today, precipitation across the fire should drive fire behavior into a pause. Firefighters will build containment lines directly on the fire’s edges wherever possible and bring disconnected sections together along Cedar Creek, areas east of Bitterroot Mountain, and from Bear Springs to Elbow Lake. Structural firefighters will provide point protection (improving defensible space around property and structures) to structures along Hall Creek.

Summit Trail Evacuations: Evacuation levels are subject to change. For more information about evacuations, call the Colville Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 or (800) 551-5800.

· Level 2 (Yellow “Get Set”): Residences along Spring Creek Road and Barnaby Creek Road. Residences from LaFleur Meadows, including Hall Creek Road south of Bear Springs Road to Lynx Creek Road’s junction with Hall Creek Road. Intersection of BIA Road 1053 and Lynx Creek Road east to the intersection with Hall Creek Road.

· Level 1 (Green – “Get Ready”): Residences along the Inchelium Highway from Inchelium to the boundary of the Colville Reservation. East of Seyler Valley Road to Gwen Mine Road and Cobb Creek Road. Twin Lakes area and structures along Bridge Creek Road.

Evacuation Shelter: Following the reduction in evacuation levels, the shelter located at the Inchelium Longhouse and Community Center is now on stand-by, should it be needed.

Summit Trail Fire Daily Update for August 19
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 24 min. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12, and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium in terrain that is steep, rough and often difficult to access. Favorable weather conditions and firefighters’ intensive work have made it possible to maximize resources for good progress on the fire’s containment. Officials at the Colville Tribes have reduced evacuation levels across the areas affected by the Summit Trail Fire.
Yesterday, cooler temperatures and increased humidity continued to moderate fire behavior, making it safer for crews to make additional progress on both direct (situated directly on the fire’s edge) and indirect (positioned beyond the fire’s edge) containment. Without the smoke or rain to impair visibility, aircraft could support firefighters’ efforts with water bucket drops as well as aerial reconnaissance. Crews assisted Mount Tolman Fire Center personnel with containing a new fire start near Simpson Lake. Overnight, firefighters on patrol found and contained another new fire start west of Cuba Canyon. These could possibly be spot fires that have been smoldering since Sunday’s Red Flag conditions or the result of lightning strikes on Monday. The total size of the two new fires is 5-6 acres; both were quickly contained.
Today, crews will continue to leverage the current weather pattern to construct and connect containment lines as close to the fire’s perimeter as possible on the north and east flanks. On the south and west flanks, firefighters will engage in on-going efforts to mop-up and patrol the established lines as well as work on bringing a line from the fire’s northwest corner to tie in with the northern flank.
Evacuation Shelter: Located at the Inchelium Longhouse and Community Center – 9 Community Loop, Inchelium, Washington 509-936-2919. These facilities have been designated for those affected by the Summit Trail Fire.

Summit Trail Fire Daily Update for August 18
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 1:28 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12, and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium in terrain that is steep, rough and often difficult to access.

Increased humidity and cooler temperatures have temporarily moderated fire behavior. Varying amounts of precipitation fell around the fire area yesterday, restoring some moisture to lighter fuels such as grasses but having minimal effect on heavier fuels such as brush and trees. The rain has also complicated firefighters’ movement around the perimeter as dirt roads became slippery with the moisture.

Yesterday, firefighters built additional sections of containment line along the north and east flanks of the fire and, as of last evening, the Brush Mountain spot fire’s perimeter was nearly surrounded by line.

Containment lines are secure on the fire’s southern edges and western flanks; today, firefighters in these areas will do mop-up and patrol. Crews are taking advantage of favorable weather conditions to safely build containment lines right at the fire’s edge around the north and east portions of the fire.

Summit Trail Evacuations: Evacuation levels are subject to change. To verify the most current status of evacuations, call the Colville Tribal Police at (509) 634-2472 or (800) 551-5800.

Summit Trail Fire Daily Update for August 17
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 3 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12, and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. The Upper Lime Creek Fire was also burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 6 miles north of Keller. The 376-acre fire is 75 percent contained. Northwest Incident Management Team 10 has been managing both the Upper Lime Creek Fire and the Summit Trail Fire with 421 personnel engaged in fighting the fires in terrain that is steep, rough and often difficult to access.

Southwesterly winds from Sunday and overnight into early Monday carried embers that ignited large spot fires on Brush and Tungsten Mountains. Winds pushed the Summit Trail Fire to the northeast, east and southeast. Using ground and air reconnaissance, fire managers were able to determine the extent of the perimeter’s growth.

Due to this fire growth, Colville Tribal Police issued additional Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices (see below). Fire crews, heavy equipment and air support engaged in structure protection in the newly affected areas. Firefighters on the south edge and southwest flank of the fire continued to build, connect and reinforce lines while crews on the west side successfully checked a fire that had moved across the containment lines.

Weather conditions are expected to moderate as a cold front enters the region. Rainfall is a possibility, but accumulations are forecast to be slight. Cooler temperatures and increased relative humidity could result in less active fire behavior.

Today, firefighters will continue structure protection, reinforce existing lines around the fire’s edges and look for favorable areas to build containment lines. Priorities include protecting homes at Barnaby Creek through containment of the fire burning on Brush Mountain, and limiting fire spread from the southeast flank toward the Twin Lakes area. This will be the last daily update to include the Upper Lime Creek Fire; responsibility for this fireis scheduled to return to Mt. Tolman Fire Center (MTFC) today. For further information about the Upper Lime Creek Fire, contact MTFC at (509) 634-3100.

Summit Trail Evacuations:

· Level 3 (Red “Go” – Leave Immediately!): Residences along Spring Creek Road and Barnaby Creek Road. Residences from LaFleur Meadows, including Hall Creek Road south of Bear Springs Road to Lynx Creek Road’s junction with Hall Creek Road. Intersection of BIA Road 1053 and Lynx Creek Road east to the intersection with Hall Creek Road. · Level 2 (Yellow “Get Set”): Residences along the Inchelium Highway from Inchelium to Highway 20. Twin Lakes area and structures along Bridge Creek Road. · Level 1 (Green – “Get Ready”): East of Seyler Valley Road to Gwen Mine Road and Cobb Creek Road.

Evacuation Shelter: Located at the Inchelium Longhouse and Community Center – 9 Community Loop, Inchelium,Washington (509) 936-2919. These facilities have been designated for those affected by the Summit Trail Fire.

Summit Trail Fire Update for August 16
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 11 hrs. ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12, and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. The Upper Lime Creek Fire, started by lightning on August 4, is also burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 6 miles north of Keller. It is now 65 percent contained, and remains at 376 acres. Mop-up operations and patrolling continue in that area.

Both fires are being managed by Northwest Incident Management Team 10, with 411 personnel engaged in fighting the fires. The situation around the Summit Trail Fire is fluid, and additional updates will be issued throughout the day.

Pushed by strong southwesterly winds during yesterday’s Red Flag Warning conditions, at least two large spot fires developed overnight to the northeast of the Summit Trail Fire, on Tungsten and Brush Mountains. As a result, the Colville Tribal Police have issued additional Level 2 (Get Set) and Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation orders. Fire crews are scouting the area, working to assess the extent of the new fire starts.

Today, fire crews and heavy equipment are actively engaging in structure protection. Currently, air support is engaged as well. Firefighters will reengage on the north and northeast flanks of the Summit Trail Fire and related spot fires after critical needs assessments are complete. Resources will be allocated where needed most. Hand crews and heavy equipment continue to build, connect and reinforce lines on the south, southeast and west flanks of the fire.

Summit Trail Evacuations:

· Level 3 (Red “Go” – Leave Immediately!): Residences along Spring Creek Road and Barnaby Creek Road. · Level 2 (Yellow “Get Set”): Residences along the Inchelium Highway from Inchelium to Highway 20 · Level 1 (Green – “Get Ready”): Residences from La Fleur south along Hall Creek Rd. to Hall Creek Flat (including Lynx Creek Rd.), Seyler Valley Rd. south to Bridge Creek Rd., and along Bridge Creek Rd. (including Mollenberg Lane) to Twin Lakes. The Twin Lakes area is under a Level 1 evacuation as well.

Upper Lime Creek Evacuations:

· Level 1 (Green – “Get Ready”) evacuation notices are in place from Empire Ck. to the Pines.

Summit Trail Fire Update for August 15
Summit Trail Wildfire
News – 2 days ago
Inchelium, WA – The Summit Trail Fire was started by lightning on July 12, and is burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. The Upper Lime Creek Fire, started by lightning on August 4, is also burning on the Colville Reservation approximately 6 miles north of Keller. Both fires are being managed by Northwest Incident Management Team 10, with 471 personnel engaged in fighting the fires.

Poor air quality persisted through Saturday as heavy smoke from fires in Washington and British Columbia impacted the region, and decreased visibility kept aircraft from flying. Hot and dry weather continues to promote active fire behavior. Despite these factors, there was no growth on the Upper Lime Creek Fireand minimal growth on the Summit Trail Fire. Firefighters made good progress strengthening fire lines using heavy equipment, hand crews and burning operations.

The excessive heat warning that was set to expire last evening has been extended through 8 p.m. on Sunday. A Red Flag Warning is posted for gusty winds and low humidity in the area, which may create dangerous fire conditions from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Today, firefighters will continue mopping up around the 376-acre Upper Lime Creek Fire, with a focus on reinforcing fire lines on the east (downwind) side of the fire along Highway 21. The fire remains at 60 percent containment.

On the Summit Trail Fire, crews continue to strengthen fire lines. Structure protection and preparation in the Twin Lakes area is ongoing. If conditions allow, crews will conduct burning operations this morning. Burning operations will reduce unburned fuels and further reinforce current containment in advance of the Red Flag Warning.

Summit Trail Evacuations: Level 1 (Advisory) evacuations are in place from Lafleur south on Hall Creek Rd. to Hall Creek Flat (including Lynx Creek Rd.), Seyler Valley Rd. south to Bridge Creek Rd., and along Bridge Creek Rd. (including Mollenberg Lane) to Twin Lakes. The Twin Lakes area is under a Level 1 evacuation as well.
